Vehicle Recover from Wabash River. Vehicle's roof rack barley visible above water line
Two divers work to secure tow cable to frame of vehicle. Swift currents made this a tedious task. One diver remained on the top of the vehicle while the other diver worked below the surface. Divers used a "buddyline" to communicate and maintain contact.
Firefighters work to secure safety lines upstream for controlling boat movements and two lines downstream for diver recovery if swept downstream. Out of the photo are two teams of firefighters with throw bags for added safety.
ON THE TOP — Bluffton Diver Mike Hiester steps out of the fire department’s boat onto the roof of Randy Wilson’s 1990 red Mercury Cougar. The department’s other diver, Mike Mann, puts on goggles as firefighters Eric Kiefer and Brandon Mechling man the boat. The divers secured tow ropes in the car so it could be pulled out.
