RESCUE 1

The Bluffton Fire Department mans and operates a Rescue Truck that serves all of Wells County, as well as provides mutual aid to surrounding counties when needed.

  • Extrication. One of three county departments (in addition to Ossian & Liberty Center Fire Departments) equipped and trained to conduct vehicle and machinery extrication. A variety of extrication tools are maintained on Rescue 1 to include Jaws of Life, Hydraulic Rams, Cutters, Spreaders, Cribbing, and Air Chisels.

  • Cascade Air Supply. Rescue 1 houses a portable air tank refill station (Cascade) used to fill air packs used by firefighters when fighting fires. Having a portable system greatly improves the departments ability to operate on scene for longer durations.

  • Ventilation. A variety of ventilation tools can found on the Rescue Rig. K-12 circular saws and chainsaw-like Quick Vents are a couple of examples. Both of these tools are used to cut vent holes in the roofs or sides of building when fighting fires.

  • Rope Rescue. Referred to as "Technical Line Rescue" in the emergency services community, the BFD maintains equipment to conduct both high angle and low angle technical line (rope) rescues. Special rope and equipment is needed when conducting operations such as this. Ropes and pulleys found at the local hardware store don't have the needed strength for such rigorous use. All rope and hardware on Rescue 1 meet NFPA guidelines for safety and maintenance.

  • Support Services. Rescue 1 houses a generater, work lights, air packs, thermal imaging camera, and other hand tools and equipment that aid in firefighting and rescue activities. It also has an air conditioned rear compartment for firefighter rehab during longer duration fires.
