Mrs. Micklitsch’s Language Arts Expectations and Guidelines 2007-2008

Behavior:  All students will conduct themselves according to the lifelong guidelines:  be trustworthy, be truthful, use no put-downs, use active listening and do your personal best.

Consequences:  The following consequences are determined by the action that prompts it:

1)  A verbal or nonverbal warning

2)  Removal from the room

3)  Teacher/student conference

4)   Teacher/parent conference via telephone, note, e-mail, or face-to-face

5)   Referral to the office (possible step)

·         Any student who chooses to become disruptive (verbally or physically) will immediately be referred to the office and a step requested.

Grading Scale:   See Handbook

Late Work Policy:    All assignments are due at the beginning of the period on the due date.

L  0% may be given for work that is being graded/discussed/reviewed in class and can’t be redone

L  Up to a 50%  grade cut for late papers whose answers are not discussed in class

L  Up to a 50%  grade cut for work done during class (student removed from room to complete)

L  Papers written in ink other than black or blue, or #2 pencil, will be considered late and must be redone, 10% cut

L  Papers with spiral edges will be considered late and must be redone, possible 10% grade cut

L  Extremely messy or illegible papers will be considered late and must be redone, probable 10-50% grade cut

L  Papers without a name will be considered late and receive a 5-10% grade cut

 ·         I will accept few excuses for late work without giving a penalty.

§  If a family emergency prevents a student from doing homework, I expect to be contacted by a parent with a phone call, e-mail or signed note before the beginning of class.  Family emergencies do not include sporting events or excuses about not understanding the work. I am almost always available by phone to answer questions.

§  The parent contact should include specific information as to when I can expect to receive the missed assignment. (It may be necessary for the student to be removed from the room if we are discussing the answers.)

§  If a student is tardy, I expect his/her work to be turned in as soon as they arrive at school if he/she missed my class.  The work should be placed in the tray or left at the office or I will consider it a late or missing assignment.

§  If you forget or don’t understand your homework assignment:  check your agenda, call a friend, check my web page www.parlorcity.com/mrsmicklitsch  , ask your parents, call me before 9:00 PM at 824-1807, but NEVER ON THURSDAYS DURING SURVIVOR!  We can work something out if you do an assignment wrong; I can’t do anything with something you didn’t bother to do.  Remember:  NO EXCUSES: Either you did the work or you didn’t.  Don’t call me the night before a project is due (several days given to complete) and tell me you don’t understand it, I won’t fall for that excuse.  I will NOT help a student with a project if he/she waits until the last minute to do it.  I give multiple days on work that requires multiple days.  Anything done at the last minute won’t be quality work, and I don’t accept messy work.

Classroom Rules (The picky stuff you have to deal with):

 *       If it looks like cheating, it is cheating!

L  I give 0 points for papers/tests that are copied work.

L  If you plan to work on homework with another student, make sure you understand all answers.  If I think you have copied and you can’t explain or repeat your answers, I will consider it cheating.

L  Working with someone else on homework is expected and can be a great learning experience.  Copying another student’s answers requires no effort and provides NO learning opportunities.

L  If you feel like you’re doing something wrong  - YOU ARE!

*       Use only non-spiral edged paper that is college ruled (provided in the room)

*       Use only blue or black ink pens or #2 pencils (no colored inks, markers, highlighters unless otherwise instructed)

*       Use only your best handwriting (cursive or printed) or type your work, illegible writing will be returned to redo

Graded Papers:

I will grade and return papers as quickly as possible.  Not all papers will receive a grade for accuracy; some will receive a completion grade. Please remember that larger assignments require longer to grade; I don’t return work unless I have all classes graded and recorded.  Keeping graded work in the classroom enables us to see improvement and also protects the student if I enter grades incorrectly.  Papers will generally be returned with grade sheets.  I don’t lose papers but I do type in the wrong grade occasionally and sometime papers are filed in wrong period.  Always double check my grades and your paper.

Books:

All books are to remain in the classroom unless otherwise instructed.  They are not to be stored in lockers unless they are needed for an overnight assignment.  You may not loan or borrow books; I will consider the possession of another student’s book theft and treat it accordingly. (Literature, Language, Novels, possible workbooks, journals)

Absences:

It is the responsibility of the student to secure all work, worksheets, and directions missed during an absence.  Please read the student handbook for details about make-up time.  If an assignment is given at the beginning of the week and due at the end of the week, a mid-week absence does not change the due date.  Please ask if you have any questions about your due date because of an absence. (Example:  vocabulary words given on Monday and due Thurs.  will not be given an extension if you miss Tues. or Wed.)  Check my web page for assignments if you are absent on Mon.: www.parlorcity.com/mrsmicklitsch

 Grade sheets:

I will try to send grades via e-mail and provide hard copies approximately once a week.  These reports are my way of communicating with parents about student academic and sometimes behavioral progress.  The grade sheets (communication tools) must be signed and returned the next day for a miscellaneous grade.  The grade sheets need to be checked for mistakes; should you find one, you must use your filed work to prove the mistake to me and I will gladly change it.  If you or your parents have any questions, please write them on the bottom of the grade sheet and I will respond as quickly as possible.

Extra Credit:  I only give extra credit to “A” students trying to earn an “A+”
