Dundee is a very special guy.  He is double bred Bright Eyes Brother with some Wapiti thrown in for good measure.  We bought his dam for our daughter's walk-trot horse while she was in foal with him.  The decision was made to leave her at the breeders to foal so as to not upset her & send her into premature labor.  We got the call that she had foaled a very loud colored colt that "had more color on him than all the others here put together!"  Of course we had to immediately go to Michigan to see him at a day old!  We were thrilled!  This was definitely a show horse prospect!!   He was already showing the heavy muscling that he would have.

We brought them home soon thereafter.  He was a delight to handle!  He was very loving & learned what he was supposed to do very quickly.  He was nominated for the Michigan & Indiana Futurities.  The Michigan Futurity was his first time ever shown.  We went, not expecting much as we had never been to that futurity before.  Much to our delight, Dundee placed 2nd in the All Age Color Class behind a 2 year old leopard stallion out of over 25 entries!  We were on our way!

We decided to show him at a couple of open shows as a warm up before the Indiana Futurity.  The Saturday show was a big success!  A National & World show Appaloosa judge was judging it that day & loved him!  She said that she never saw a baby track as nice & straight as he did.  Needless to say, he cleaned up!  The Sunday show was just as good.  Different judge, same results!

Coming home from the Sunday show, he decided that he didn't want to be in the trailer anymore.  Somehow he popped the trailer skirts open (it was a totally enclosed trailer) & bailed out the back at 60 miles an hour on a U.S. Highway.  He was only 5 months old at the time.   Well, we found out that babies bounce!  He had severe road burn on his legs & body, both knees were ripped open & he knocked out a front tooth.

We called the vet immediately & waited at the site for him to get there, all the time thinking the worst (euthanasia).  The vet came in record time, checked him over & bandaged him up as well as he could until we could get him to their facilities.  We rode with him in the trailer & all he could think of was "I'm Hungry!"  He ate hay the whole way over!  He was there for a week to have x-rays & round-the-clock care.   He never did lose his appetite! Then he came home.  He was a model patient!   We had to re-bandage all 4 of his legs every day.  He had a splint on to keep his one leg straight as to not pull a pin drain out of the knee.  It took an hour each night to re-bandage & he let our 10 year son hold him while we wrapped.  He never chewed bandages, never lost his appetite, & never lost his temper or patience!

He could never get over the lameness however & we couldn't figure out why so we had x-rays taken on the one leg that had seemed OK at the time of the accident.  Bad news.  He had a bone cyst that had been caused from a dislocation of the pastern during the accident & had then popped back in.  He had to have SURGERY!

At 1 1/2 years of age, we took him to Ohio State University where he had 3 screws put in his pastern joint & was put in a cast.  He had to stay there for 5 weeks.  Every time we called to check on him the comments were always, "He's so sweet!!" or "He's such a good boy! What a shock it was when we went to pick him up & he looked like he was pregnant!! They said that usually a horse will lose weight after a surgery & forced confinement but he was just the opposite!  (I think they were sneaking him treats too!!)  Anyway, we got him home & put him on a diet while rehabilitating him.  Again, he was the model patient!  As long as he had his Jolly Ball he was happy!

Needless to say, he won't be shown again due to the scars from the accident & surgery.  However,we believe that things happen for a reason.  We decided that the reason he even survived the accident was that we were to give him the chance to pass on all his wonderful traits to his get.  He is now proving that he can!!
