Ms. Magazine
Awards Planned Parenthood That Refused to Help Infanticde Case
New
York, NY -- Jill June, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of
Greater Iowa, yesterday received a Ms. Magazine Women of the Year
award for her decision to not release medical records as part of an
investigation into a brutal infanticide case.
After the
discovery of the body of the deceased infant in a local recycling
center, authorities in Iowa's Buena Vista County this summer obtained
subpoenas to require officials at the Storm Lake Planned
Parenthood clinic and four other area hospitals and clinics to
release information about women
who received positive pregnancy
test results in a specified period. The goal was to attempt to track
down the mother who may have abandoned the baby for
dead.
While
other medical facilities complied, Planned Parenthood did not.
June
and other Planned Parenthood administrators contested the subpoena in
court. They argued that state and federal law protects the
confidentiality of
pregnancy test results as private medical
records. In October, Buena Vista County officials withdrew their
subpoena of the clinic's records.
June said that the Woman of
the Year award, "while presented to me personally, is much more
of an affirmation of the importance of medical
privacy and the
need for access to quality reproductive care."
She added
that she and other Planned Parenthood officials will continue to
"refuse to compromise" the confidentiality of reproductive
health services.
Pro-abortion Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA),
actresses Nia Vardalos and Jamie Lee Curtis and the organization
Sisters for Economic Dignity also received Woman of the Year awards
from the pro-abortion magazine.
