as bound with them;

and them which suffer adversity,

as being yourselves in the body.

Biographical Note

From looking at my web site, you have found out a lot about the subjects and issues that mean a great deal to me. The persecution of Christians and suffering, especially of children, break my heart. I believe that Scripture teaches two clear ways to show our love for Christ: 1. by obedience (John 14:15-24 ), 2. by serving others as though we were serving the Lord Himself (Matthew 25:31-46). All of the other ways that we demonstrate our love may be good, but without these two areas that the Lord Himself mentioned, they are meaningless.

Being blessed to live in a republic, I believe that my love for the Lord should include utilizing the rights and opportunities we have to influence society through speaking out, through writing letters to the editor, through contacting my legislators, and through voting. I do not believe that politics will save us, but, to the other extreme, neither do I see in the Bible that those who learn from Scripture what society should be, what justice is, or what blesses a nation should disengage from the culture as some of my non-resistant friends believe. Instead we should use every opportunity we have, both as individuals in our everyday lives and as citizens, to be Christians, “little Christs,” to the world around us. If we who love the Lord and try to live for Him, do not reach out to those around us, seek revival, and influence our world for Christ, others will enforce their world view to the detriment of our children and grandchildren and nation.

The greatest blessing and responsibility for both men and women is to raise the next generation for Christ. Abraham earned God's trust in the matter of Sodom because God knew he would raise his household for Him. (Genesis 18:17-19) For us homeschooling has played an important part in our fulfilling our responsibility and has brought us great joy. Next to seeing our children come to the Lord, being the instrument to teach them to read, to open to them the world of reading the Bible, of learning anything from print, and of watching them break the code of reading has to be the most meaningful thing in my life. With all the facts and knowledge they have gained in our 18 years of home homeschooling, they have taught me much more, have lifted me up with their innocent singing of hymns, have startled me with their perceptions, have comforted me in the sorrow of losing two babies, have challenged my thinking, and have made me immensely thankful and humble as I see the men they are becoming.

God has overwhelmed me with His goodness over the years. He has given me a wonderful husband who is the most colorful and interesting person I know, one who loves me in spite of my less than flawless housekeeping and my weight problems. He has blessed me with two wonderful sons and a lovely daughter-in-law who is strong in all of my weak places. He has given me parents whom I love and admire more each year and siblings who have been so much better to me than I deserve. He has blessed me with kind and caring extended family and in-laws who could not have been better to me. He has given His Word to me, and friends to teach, comfort, encourage, and sometimes gently rebuke me. And when the heartaches and trials and difficult decisions have come, He has brought into my path people or writings, or sermons that have helped me grow. And He has been merciful, patient, and forgiving. Truly the Lord is good.

On the more mundane level, I am thankful for a warm house, a comfortable bed, the farmer's field that stretches outside my office window. A medium sized mutt prances whenever one of us speaks to her and gazes her adoration at us when we pat her. Then there is our rottweiler who claims her spot as a 130-pound lapdog, comprehends almost everything I say to her, and dances like a puppy when she wants a treat. I enjoy the beauty that the Lord allows me to see, hear, smell and taste-- the glory of the sunsets or a field of wildflowers, the first birdsong of morning, the burst of strawberries in my mouth, the scent of a bean or corn field on a hot summer day. Many, many blessings.
